Douglas Soares Galvão | Research

Douglas S. Galvao graduated in physics from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN-Natal,Brazil) in 1982 and obtained a PhD in science from the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP, Campinas, Brazil) in 1989, under the supervision of Professor Marília J. Caldas. In 1989-1990 he was an Assistant Professor in the Physics Department at the University of São Paulo in Bauru (Bauru, Brazil). In 1990 he joined the Applied Physics Department at UNICAMP, where he has been Full Professor since 2005. From 1991 to 1993, he was a postdoc at Professor Zoltan Soos group in the Chemistry Department at the PrincetonUniversity, in Princeton-USA, where he conducted research on the electronic properties of organic materials. At the same period he had also a joint appointment at Bell Communications Research (BELLCORE), Red Bank-USA at Dr. S. Etemad’s group. Douglas Galvao’s research interests are focused on the study of structural, mechanical and transport properties of nano-materials using classical and quantum Molecular Dynamics simulations and Finite Elements methods. In the last years, the Galvao group has been investigating nanostructures, in particular, metallic nanowires and carbon-based (fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, graphene, nanoscrolls, nanocones, etc.). More recently the group has been focused on the modeling of carbon nanotubes as the structural basis for macroscale applications, such as, bucky papers and artificial muscles.
